McIver Dam Update

Fluvanna County continues to monitor an evolving situation with a privately-owned dam located at McIver Lake. This is a private lake in the south portion of the county, near Bremo Bluff.

As of 10:30am this morning, the dam is holding.

To recap the situation:

  • Fluvanna County was notified Monday, March 21, 2022 at approximately 2:00pm of an imminent dam failure in the southern region of the county. This privately-owned lake and dam is located a distance from any public road and not easily accessible by automobile.
  • At 7:15pm yesterday, Fluvanna County received notification that Governor Youngkin invoked Virginia Code Section 10.1-608, Code of VA, authorizing Fluvanna County to take all prudent actions necessary to alleviate the imminent failure of this dam.
  • Fluvanna County is coordinating with several state agencies, Dominion Energy, and the Virginia Department of Transportation to remediate and mitigate the potential effects of this situation.
  • Pumping apparatus has been on-site since midnight last night, pumping at approximately 1,000 gallons per minute. Additional pumping equipment is headed to the site to aid in remediation efforts.
  • As noted yesterday, Bremo Road continues to be closed from the intersection of Route 657/Bremo Bluff Road to the 1400 Block Bremo Road.
  • Home-/property owners in the immediate area have been notified of the situation.
