Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney

Position Summary:
The Fluvanna County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is seeking a full-time Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney to perform advanced professional legal work as a prosecutor for the County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. This position is responsible for preparing and prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases, reviewing investigations, managing discovery and digital evidence, conducting legal research and writing, and working closely with law enforcement, victims, witnesses, court officials, and community partners.
This position offers meaningful courtroom experience and the opportunity to handle a broad range of criminal matters in a team-oriented office serving a growing community in Central Virginia.
What You’ll Do - Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and present misdemeanor and felony cases in General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Circuit Court.
- Review investigations, reports, and proposed charges with law enforcement personnel.
- Make charging decisions and recommendations as delegated by the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
- Prosecute assigned cases originating from the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women and other assigned criminal matters.
- Interview and prepare law enforcement officers, victims, witnesses, and other individuals in preparation for court proceedings.
- Manage discovery obligations, including review, organization, disclosure, and handling of electronic and digital evidence.
- Prepare pleadings, motions, orders, discovery responses, bills of particulars, and related legal documents.
- Conduct legal research and writing for criminal trials, hearings, and related proceedings.
- Consult with the Victim/Witness Coordinator concerning victims’ rights issues.
- Negotiate with opposing counsel consistent with office policies and prosecutorial discretion.
- Participate in specialty dockets, SART, MDT, and similar coordinated response teams or proceedings as assigned.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and training to law enforcement, school officials, and community partners when required.
- Perform related tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, rules of evidence, state laws, local ordinances, and court decisions applicable to criminal prosecution.
- Thorough knowledge of legal research, legal writing, discovery obligations, and case preparation.
- Ability to exercise sound prosecutorial judgment and manage a complex caseload.
- Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong courtroom advocacy, negotiation, and oral communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and accurate legal documents.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional integrity, and sound judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County and state officials, court officials, law enforcement personnel, members of the Bar, victims, witnesses, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar, or eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia before appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least three years of prosecutorial experience.
- Experience in criminal law, courtroom litigation, discovery management, digital evidence, specialty dockets, or work with law enforcement and victim/witness programs.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
- Work requires fingering, grasping, repetitive motions, vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
- Work is generally performed in an office and courtroom environment.

Fluvanna County is located approximately one (1) hour from the City of Richmond and twenty (20) minutes from the City of Charlottesville. Residency in Fluvanna County is not a requirement.

Full-Time (Benefits) | Pay Grade 27 | Exempt
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, within the approved pay range.
Salary Range: $93,766 - $107,827 annually
