Position Summary:

Fluvanna County is seeking an Assistant Equipment and Fleet Maintenance Technician to assist with semiskilled maintenance and repair of County vehicles and equipment under supervision. This position supports the County’s fleet maintenance operations by assisting with inspections, basic repairs, parts and tool inventory, shop upkeep, and vehicle/equipment transport. The position also supports Public Works during snow, ice, inclement weather, and emergency operations.

What You’ll Do — Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with maintenance and repair of County vehicles and equipment.
  • Identify and report significant repair and maintenance concerns through regular inspections.
  • Assist with the County’s State Vehicle Inspection program.
  • Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of parts and tools.
  • Clean and care for tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
  • Attend required safety training.
  • Assist Public Works with snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Perform assistant-level repairs on equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Work at the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Technician and be available to assist in the Fleet Maintenance Technician’s absence.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Developing working knowledge of mechanical trade practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to assist with the use and maintenance of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and machine tools used in light equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to assist in troubleshooting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing small engines, light power-driven equipment, and hand-operated power equipment, including small gas-powered engines, tractors, mowers, trailers, generators, lawn edgers, snow blowers, pressure washers, and chainsaws.
  • Ability to interpret and apply information from technical manuals, service manuals, schematic diagrams, and other reference materials.
  • Basic computer competency, including email, web browser use, and word processing.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the trade.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, maintained throughout employment.
  • Basic tools and equipment will be provided by the County and will remain County property.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

This is physically demanding work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

The position requires vocal communication, hearing at normal spoken-word levels, and visual acuity for depth perception, color perception, close inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

Work may involve environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and exposure to oils. Personal protective equipment is required.

Essential Services: This position is classified as Essential Personnel and must be available to work during inclement weather, emergency closures, and emergency call-back situations to perform essential and/or emergency services for the County.

Starting Pay:

$18.14 - $20.86 per hour. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, within the approved pay range.
