Position Summary:

Fluvanna County is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Worker I to perform groundskeeping, landscaping, and general maintenance throughout County rights-of-way, parks, playgrounds, and other public areas. Working under general supervision, the position operates grounds-maintenance equipment and supports minor facility maintenance, special events, and emergency response.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):

  • Maintain rights-of-way, parks, playgrounds, and other public areas by mowing grass, spreading mulch, and raking and collecting leaves.
  • Seed lawns; plant flowers, shrubs, and trees; edge sidewalks, borders, and planting beds; and trim weeds, grass, and hedges.
  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers when properly licensed and/or under appropriate supervision.
  • Operate mowers, tractors and implements, trucks, plows, and other equipment as trained, and use hand and power tools safely.
  • Perform snow and ice control and assist with emergency operations as directed.
  • Perform or assist with minor building maintenance, including lamp replacement, painting, and basic carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work.
  • Assist or substitute for custodial maintenance staff and support special-event setups and other County projects as assigned.
  • Attend required training and continuing education and perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of grounds-maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Skill in the safe use of basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia, maintained throughout employment.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds frequently, and more than 20 pounds constantly to move objects. The position regularly requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Specialized personal protective equipment may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Services:

This position is designated as essential personnel and must be available during inclement weather and for emergency call-back. The employee may be called in or held over to perform essential and emergency services for the County.

Pay Range: $16.30 - $18.74
