Position Summary

Fluvanna County is seeking an HVAC Assistant to support our HVAC/R Specialist with the installation, operation, maintenance, service, and repair of HVAC/R systems across County facilities. This role helps inspect and test high/low-pressure heating systems, diagnose malfunctions, and support repairs by replacing parts and adjusting controls/blowers. The position also supports compliance with EPA/federal environmental requirements related to refrigerants and hazardous materials.

Essential Personnel: This position is designated Essential Personnel and may be called upon to work during closures and emergencies.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):

  • Assist with HVAC/R installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance on equipment such as heat pumps, compressors, boilers, chillers, generators, fans/blowers, and computerized control systems.
  • Assist with diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Assist with disassembly and replacement/retrofit of components; check clearances/voltages and perform amp readings before returning equipment to service.
  • Assist with monitoring inventory for mechanical/plumbing systems.
  • Perform work in a safe, professional manner following OSHA/EPA guidance, equipment specs, and County safety procedures.
  • Use basic computer tools (email, web browser, word processing).
  • Support other building maintenance tasks as needed, including assisting Public Works with snow and ice removal.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to use common hand/power tools (wrenches, drills, cutters/benders, torches, etc.).
  • Ability to read and use diagnostic tools/meters (amp meters, voltmeters, refrigerant gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to work from ladders and in enclosed spaces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain productive working relationships with staff, vendors, and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CFC Refrigeration Certificate or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license (Commonwealth of Virginia) maintained throughout employment.

County provides basic tools/equipment (remain County property).

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

This is physically demanding work requiring exertion over 100 lbs occasionally, 50+ lbs frequently, and 20+ lbs constantly, with regular climbing, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and repetitive motion. Work may involve extreme temperatures, noise/vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and exposure to oils. PPE is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Essential Services: Must be available for inclement weather and emergency call-back to perform essential/emergency services.
