Position Summary:
Fluvanna County is recruiting for a Library Assistant I to support general library operations and educational programming at the Fluvanna County Public Library. This position helps plan and deliver programs for children, teens, adults, and community groups while also assisting patrons with circulation services, reference support, technology resources, and day-to-day library operations. The role requires creativity, strong customer service skills, and a genuine interest in helping and educating patrons.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):

  • Plan, prepare, and implement age-appropriate educational programming for children, teens, adults, and groups.
  • Plan, prepare, and implement summer and winter reading programs.
  • Provide reference and advisory services to patrons in person, by phone, and by email.
  • Assist patrons with library equipment, software, and other resources.
  • Perform circulation duties, including checking materials in and out, receiving fine payments, and creating library cards.
  • Assist patrons with downloading and accessing eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Create informational and program-related displays and bulletin boards.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library services for children, teens, and adults.
  • Ability to assist patrons with computer operations and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to learn and communicate library policies and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce creative programs, displays, and promotional materials.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of college-level coursework in Liberal Arts, Education, Library Science, or a closely related field.
  • One year of experience in educational programming, customer service, or library operations.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing or leading educational, literacy, or enrichment programming.
  • Experience working directly with the public in a customer-focused environment.
  • Experience assisting patrons with technology, digital resources, or library systems.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work one Saturday per month.
  • Must have sufficient physical ability to work in an office-type setting and sit, walk, or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Work requires frequent bending, twisting, reaching, and grasping in handling books and other materials.
  • Work is typically performed indoors, although some special programming may be held outdoors.
