Position Summary

Fluvanna County Public Library is seeking a Library Assistant II to support day-to-day library operations while helping design and deliver engaging educational and cultural programming for the community. This position plays a hands-on role in creating programs such as school field trips, story times, summer/winter camps, after-school clubs, and other activities for children, teens, and adults. The ideal candidate is creative, service-oriented, and enjoys helping patrons learn, explore, and access library resources.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):

  • Plan, prepare, and implement age-appropriate educational programming for children, teens, adults, and groups.
  • Plan, prepare, and implement summer and winter reading programs.
  • Provide research reference and advisory services to patrons in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Assist patrons with equipment, software, and other library resources.
  • Perform circulation duties (check-in/out, receive fine payments, and create library cards).
  • Help patrons download and access eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Create informational and program-related displays and bulletin boards.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Support financial/operational tasks such as paying invoices, assisting with the annual budget, and reconciling fines and patron accounts.
  • Supervise and schedule part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Serve as the lead for daily operations in the absence of the Library Director.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library services for children, teens, and adults.
  • Ability to assist patrons with computers and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to learn and clearly communicate library policies and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Strong customer service skills with clear oral and written communication.
  • Ability to create engaging programs, displays, and promotional materials.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of educational programming techniques for youth and families.
  • Knowledge of staff scheduling and supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Literature, Business, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in research, educational programming, or small business management (including supervisory experience).
  • Prior library or youth educator experience required.
  • Any combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work one (1) Saturday per month.
  • Work is primarily indoors in an office/library setting, with some programs potentially held outdoors.
  • Requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift/carry up to 10 lbs and occasionally lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, reaching, and grasping while handling books and materials.
