Position Summary:

Fluvanna County is recruiting for a part-time Park Maintenance Worker to support the Department of Parks and Recreation. This position performs grounds maintenance, landscaping, trail maintenance, disc golf course maintenance, minor repairs, and general park upkeep to help maintain the appearance, safety, and usability of County park facilities.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation. Physical presence on the job is required, as the essential functions and responsibilities of this position are field-based and not suited to remote work.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):

  • Operate equipment such as mowers, tractors, trucks, gators, hand tools, and power tools as trained.
  • Construct and maintain public trails, including removing fallen or damaged trees and limbs, removing invasive plants and litter, and repairing erosion damage.
  • Maintain the disc golf course by removing fallen branches, edging tee-box borders, repairing and mounting disc baskets, mowing grass, and removing invasive plants and litter.
  • Make minor repairs to picnic tables, shelters, and other park amenities.
  • Mow and maintain landscaping around Pleasant Grove House, Park, and Museum.
  • Maintain ball fields at Carysbrook Sports Complex, including mowing, weed eating, and dragging ball fields weekly.
  • Assist with setup for special events and parks projects.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of trail maintenance standards.
  • Knowledge of Parks and Recreation programs and upcoming events.
  • Knowledge of departmental safety guidelines.
  • Skill in handling basic hand tools and power tools.
  • Skill in using modern lawn equipment for mowing and weed eating.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to repair public amenities.
  • Ability to keep the supervisor informed of plans, progress, and problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in public parks or recreation facilities.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • This is heavy work requiring the ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may require climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • This position requires vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity, including depth perception, color perception, visual inspection, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
  • The worker is subject to outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
