Position Summary:

Fluvanna County is accepting applications for the position of Sheriff’s Office Compliance & Operations Specialist. This is a specialized, non-sworn civilian position that provides operational, compliance, training, records, evidence/property, and administrative support to the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.

What You’ll Do - Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will assist command staff and operational divisions with training coordination, accreditation and policy compliance, evidence and property functions, records management, report review, non-criminal fingerprinting, public and lobby inquiries, and other assigned operational support duties. This position works in a civilian capacity and does not independently exercise sworn law-enforcement authority.

Duties include coordinating, scheduling, tracking, and documenting agency training; assisting with accreditation, professional standards, and policy compliance activities; maintaining proofs of compliance and supporting audit or inspection readiness; assisting with evidence and property receipt, storage, release, destruction, and disposition; preparing and reviewing reports, forms, records, and official documentation; supporting records retention, expungement, sealing, and FOIA-related records coordination; and providing professional assistance to the public, agency personnel, courts, outside agencies, and other stakeholders.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Applicants must have strong knowledge of law-enforcement operations, public-safety administration, confidentiality requirements, records management, evidence handling, agency chain of command, criminal justice information systems, and professional standards. The position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, organize detailed records, track deadlines, communicate professionally, and handle sensitive law-enforcement information appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and prior certification as a DCJS Certified Law Enforcement Officer. Prior law-enforcement experience must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of law-enforcement operations, legal compliance, professional standards, and public-safety practices to perform the assigned duties.

The selected candidate must possess an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and must currently hold, or obtain within one year of appointment, NCIC/VCIN Level B certification, at a minimum, unless a higher or different level is required by assigned duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates with advanced education, specialized training, or certifications in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, records management, accreditation, evidence management, emergency services, or a related field. Preference may also be given to candidates with experience in agency accreditation, professional standards, policy review, law-enforcement training coordination, evidence/property management, records management, report writing, VCIN/NCIC access, FOIA coordination, or law-enforcement administrative operations.

Appointment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include employment verification, local, state, and federal criminal history checks, DMV check, sex offender registry check, credit check, reference checks, and verification of certifications, training, and qualifications. The selected candidate must maintain continued eligibility for criminal justice information access and comply with applicable CJIS, VCIN/NCIC, Virginia State Police, FBI, DCJS, County, and Sheriff’s Office requirements.
