Proudly serving the homeowners of Lake Monticello -  The Lake Monticello Department of Public Safety is made up of Police and Security.  The Police Department is a private police department established to provide supplemental law enforcement services to the residents of Lake Monticello 

Assisting Agencies

Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office works closely with several agencies.  The following agencies assist us with our jobs on a daily basis.  The agencies are the Lake Monticello Police Department, the Virginia State Police, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fishery. Together we make Fluvanna County a better and safer place to live.

Livestock and Feral Cats

 Livestock:

  • If you own livestock please make sure that the Sheriff's Office has your contact information (ie: address, telephone number and type of livestock you own). This will help the Animal Protection officer and other deputies that respond to the area for the report of roaming live stock so that we can contact the proper owner.

Feral Cats:

  • Animal Protection officers do not respond to the report of feral cats.

Preparing to care for your pets in an emergency

  • The Fluvanna County Animal Control Division encourages pet owners to create a disaster plan for both yourself and your pets
  • Some emergency shelters do not accept pets other than service animals
  • Do not leave your pets outside during an emergency
  • Refer to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management for suggestions about what to include in a pet emergency supply kit: www.vaemergency.gov/readyvirginia/getakit/pets

How do I obtain a dog license in Fluvanna County?

  • All dogs are required to have a Fluvanna County Dog License obtained through the Fluvanna County Treasurer’s Office. The license is due by January 31st of each year. Proof of rabies vaccination is required before a license can be issued.

  • Dog or cat bites
  • Animal cruelty or neglect
  • Human exposure /encounters with potential rabid animals
  • Sick or injured domestic animals or livestock

Fluvanna Animal Protection is a unit of the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office. The division consists of two Animal Protection Officers.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Animal Protection Division is to support responsible pet ownership, humane treatment of animals, compliance with statutes and ordinances for the control and protection of animals.
