Major Wells has been serving Fluvanna since 2006, but his law enforcement career goes back much farther.  He started law enforcement in 1995 when he first served as an Auxiliary Police Officer for the City of Colonial Heights Police Department.  In 1997 he became a Police Officer for the Division of Capitol Police in Richmond.  From there he became a Police Officer for the City of Waynesboro Police Department where he started as a patrol officer before moving up to become a detective.  He also served on the department's SWAT Team.  From there he became a Special Agent with the Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control, Bureau of Law Enforcement.  In addition to his normal duties, Wells was also assigned to a regional drug enforcement task force to help combat illicit drugs in central Virginia.  Wells was later promoted to a Senior Special Agent.  In 2006, Wells became an Investigator for the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.  From there Wells rose through the ranks to become the Chief Deputy before retiring in 2022.  After retiring Wells became the Director of Public Safety & Chief of Police for the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association, a homeowners association in Fluvanna County with a population of over 10,000 Fluvanna residents. In 2025, Wells decided to return to government service and once again serves as Chief Deputy.  The Chief Deputy serves as second in command of the Sheriff’s Office and oversees all law enforcement operations.  Wells is grateful for the opportunity to serve all the residents of Fluvanna.

Wells holds an Associate in Science degree from Richard Bland College.  In 2015, Wells was the first deputy from the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office to graduate from the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy.  The National Academy is an intensive  executive leadership program held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA attended by senior law enforcement officials from around the globe.  Wells has held DCJS Law Enforcement Instructor certification for over 24 years
