Sheriff Eric B. Hess

Sheriff Hess considers himself one of the most fortunate people in the Law Enforcement profession.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Fluvanna County.  Dedicating more than 30 years of his life to public service, 24 of those years in Law Enforcement, Sheriff Hess has enjoyed a diverse and rewarding career.

He began his Law Enforcement career with the Alabama National Guard Military Police.  After graduation, he started employment with the Columbus Police Department in Columbus, Georgia.  Hess moved to Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1997 and worked with the Albemarle Sheriff’s Office.  In 2006, he accepted the position of Chief Deputy with the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.   In 2014 he was appointed interim-Sheriff of Fluvanna County.  In a special election in 2014, Hess was elected Sheriff and ran unopposed in the 2015 election and again in 2019.

He also worked as a part-time Criminal Justice Instructor for Columbus State University topics such as Community Based Corrections, Probation and Parole, Rules of Evidence, and Police Administration.

He continued law enforcement teaching positions with Troy State University in Fort Benning, Georgia, and Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Sheriff Hess is married to Ellen Jenkins Hess, and they have six children: Matthew, Courtney, Katie, Cabell, Ashby, and Mills. Eric and Ellen live on a farm in Scottsville.
