Severe Weather Awareness Week March 4th - 8th, 2024

VDEM is partnering with the National Weather Service to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week. The week is designed to refresh, remind, and educate everyone about the seasonal threats from severe weather and how to avoid them. It’s also a great time to make and practice your emergency plan!

FEBRUARY IS TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

In the United States, up to 19% of teens experience sexual or physical dating violence, about half face stalking or harassment, and as many as 65% report being psychologically abused (“Teen Dating Violence,” Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of Justice, 2022).

Threat to Burn/Bomb – Fluvanna County High School

On September 27, 2023, the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office received information from the administration at the Fluvanna County High School of a bomb threat that had been posted to/observed on social media. In this instance and in the interest of safety, school administration began the process of dismissing students. Multiple deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded to assist in the dismissal process.

Oct 21, 2023 - Coffee and Conversation - Lake Monticello Area

The Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors and the Fluvanna County Planning Commission will each hold a Special Meeting in order to attend the Coffee and Conversation with the County Town Hall Meeting for the Lake Monticello Area, Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

The meeting will be held in the Maple Room, Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire and Rescue, located at 10 Slice Rd, Palmyra, VA and will begin 10:00am.

Sat, Sep 30, 2023 - Drive Through Rabies Clinic

Rabies clinic is on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Pleasant Grove Park. Clinic is from 9:00 am to noon. 

Pre-registration (here) will close Thursday, September 28, 2023 at midnight. 

You can still come to the clinic and register there.  

Smoke from Canada wildfires impacting local air quality.

The current Air Quality Index (AQI) in Fluvanna County is rated as unhealthy for all people. Older adults, pregnant women, children and people with preexisting respiratory and heart conditions may experience more serious effects.

RIVANNA RIVER COMPANY EXPANDS RIVER EXCURSIONS INTO FLUVANNA COUNTY

Rivanna River Company will launch their newest river experience on Saturday, June 10, 2023.  Enthusiasts will begin their adventure at the new Rivanna River Company outpost located at E.W. Thomas Grocery, 13027 James Madison Highway, Palmyra, VA  22963.  Paddlers will be shuttled to the Crofton boat launch to begin their float back to the Palmyra boat landing.

Few Fluvanna Voters Eligible for June 20 Primary

Nineteen Fluvanna County voters are eligible to cast ballots in the upcoming June 20, 2023, Democratic primary.

This strange turn of events is a result of the redistricting process which took place after the 2021 census. Unlike the situation before redistricting, all of Fluvanna is now entirely within the Tenth Virginia State Senate district.
