DIVISIONS

The Sheriff's Office has three primary parts, identified as Divisions. The divisions are comprised of sections, and units. Each division has a Chief who is assigned the rank of Captain or Director.

 

Administration

Judicial Affairs Section

The section is comprised of two units; Court Services, and Civil Process.

Court Security Unit - This Court Services Unit of the Division is responsible for Courthouse Security, and transportation of prisoners. Responsibilities also include: ensuring safety within the courthouse and transporting prisoners to and from the court. 

Civil Enforcement/Process Unit - The Civil Process Unit of the Division serves civil process throughout Fluvanna county.

School Resource Officer Unit

A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a full-time law enforcement officer who works in a school to reduce crime, educate students and staff on law enforcement issues, investigate major crimes that occur on campus, and counsel students and/or parents in law enforcement matters. SROS are to be good role models for the students.

It is a goal of the SROS to make our learning institutions safe to give all students an opportunity to reach their full educational potential.

 

Property and Evidence Unit

The Property and Evidence Unit is responsible for the custody, documentation, and preservation of all physical evidence seized or obtained by the Sheriff’s Office. The best physical evidence in the world becomes useless if it is not handled correctly, so this unit takes pride in doing so with complete accuracy. The care and attention to detail of the Property and Evidence Unit play a vital role because it provides direct, critical services for every employee who deals with physical evidence and property. Hundreds of items of different varieties are all documented, secured, and stored by the Property and Evidence Unit so they can be safely preserved until it is needed in court or returned to its rightful owner.

Operations

Patrol Section

This section is a major line element of the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office and is responsible for 24-hour patrol and crime prevention functions, preliminary investigation of most crimes and complete investigation of others, preparation of reports relating to crimes or incidents, traffic enforcement, and calls for non-crime related services. 

The section is comprised of six units; five individual call response shifts. Four of the units are led by a sergeant who supervises the shift. One unit is a flexible unit, used to augment the other four, during times of higher demand.

Investigations Section

The responsibilities of this division include: investigating major crimes which occur within the County of Fluvanna; collecting, identifying, and preserving any necessary physical evidence which has not been previously processed by the Patrol Division; preparing and presenting cases to the Commonwealth Attorney for formal charging and prosecution of offenders; and coordinating and serving warrants and other legal documents. 

Animal Control Unit

Animal Control provides a wide array of services between animals and humans.  ACOs are responsible for enforcing county ordinances and state laws that pertain to animals and their treatment. The primary function of a Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer is to help protect county residents while dealing with domestic and other animals as humanely as possible.

Reserve Deputy Unit

The Reserve Program is a volunteer unit of the agency. The Reserve Program is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of our community by providing professional law enforcement services in support of the Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office.

 

Communications & Technology

Emergency Communications Center

The Communications Division is under the authority of a civilian, who carries the rank and authority of a Captain within the agency. The Director of Communications commands the Emergency Communications Center (E.C.C.) and is responsible for the following: Staffing and managing the Center’s operation; implementing policies and procedures for the efficient operation of the Center; Planning and coordinating the technical support of the Center; and providing 24-hour dispatching for law enforcement, fire, and EMS. 

Public Safety Radio System

Fluvanna Counties state of the art Public Safety Radio System is managed by the Director of Communications and Technology.  This includes the maintenace oversight of the systems 6 towers sites, "Core" equipment at the Sheriff's Office, and subscriber units.

Information Technology

Sheriff's Office and E-911 information technology is under the oversight of the Director of Communications and Technology.  This includes the management of the key infrasture and client devices.
