Initial Applications

Applicants may apply online any time or in-person in the Clerk's Office from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Persons wishing to obtain a concealed handgun permit are required to apply in the City or County of their residence (i.e., only Fluvanna County residents may apply through the Fluvanna Circuit Court).
  • First-time applicants are required to provide proof of competency with a handgun pursuant to Section 18.2-308.02 of the Code of Virginia. As of January 1, 2021 online courses are no longer accepted as proof of competency with a handgun, you must take an IN PERSON course. Individuals who hold a permit from another state and who wish to obtain a permit from this Court must provide proof of competency with a handgun as well. 
  • The filing fee collected by the Clerk's Office is $50.
  • Processing of these applications can take up to 45 days. The Sheriff's Department performs background checks and then forwards this information to the Circuit Court who enters an order either granting or denying the permit.
  • The Clerk’s Office will mail the permit (or notice of denial) to the applicant.  Please allow 45 days from the time the completed application is filed with the Clerk’s Office.
