Concealed Handgun Permits

​**Beginning January 1, 2021 online courses will no longer be accepted as proof of competency with a handgun, you must take an IN PERSON course**

  • Persons wishing to obtain a concealed handgun permit are required to apply in the City or County of their residence (i.e., only Fluvanna residents may apply through the Fluvanna Circuit Court).
  • Applications are available and may be filed in the Clerk's Office from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Applications are also available through the State Police at the following web site: https://vsp.virginia.gov
  • First-time applicants must appear in person and present a valid form of photo identification issued by a governmental agency of the Commonwealth or by the U.S. Department of Defense or U.S. State Department (passport).   
  • First-time applicants are required to provide proof of competency with a handgun (please see Section 18.2-308.02 of the Code of Virginia).  Individuals who hold a permit from another state and who wish to obtain a permit from this Court must provide proof of competency with a handgun as well. 
  • Renewal applications should be submitted no sooner than 180 days prior to the expiration date of the current permit.
  • Renewal applications may be submitted by mail along with a photocopy of the most recent permit and a photocopy of the applicant's valid photo identification. 
  • The processing fee is $50.  
  • With check or money order, renewal applications may be submitted by mail to:  Fluvanna County Circuit Court, P.O. Box 550, Palmyra, VA  22963. 
  • Processing of these applications can take up to 45 days.
  • The Clerk’s Office will mail the permit (or notice of denial) to the applicant.  Please allow 45 days from the time the completed application is filed with the Clerk’s Office.
