The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Issues a Scam Alert

In a recent report to the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), there was an individual or individuals posing as law enforcement in a text message. The message read in part that caller was Miami-Dade Special Victim Unit, Detective Michael Carr #6268. The text message read that the caller was a member of the ICAC (Internet Crimes against Children), task force, and the message directed the citizen call him back. The text message also stated that if Detective Carr did not receive a call back, he would file charges against the citizen, and have him arrested and extradited to Florida.

A FCSO Investigator spoke with the Miami-Dade Police Sex Crimes Unit, and was informed that they do not have a Det. Michael Carr, #6268 in their Department. Additionally, they had received eight (8) complaints in the past month in reference to this same type of scam. The Miami detective was given the phone number that Michael Carr wanted to be contacted on for their records. The FCSO Investigator was told that the Miami-Dade County Police Department is investigating this issue. The scam is believed to be an attempt to gather personal information or extort money.
